Switzerland contains modern cities separated by huge glaciers, green Alpine meadows, a large number of ski runs, small mountain villages and high mountain summits that are covered with snow all the year round.
More than half of Switzerland is covered by the Alps, which is one of the most important mountain ranges in Europe. It is therefore an excellent country for snow and skiing holidays. You should certainly visit one of the 1.000 glaciers, including the large Aletsch Glacier in Wallis, which is about 20 kilometres long.
The north of Switzerland contains a plateau with important cities, such as Zurich, Basle and the capital, Berne. Zurich is the biggest city as well as the financial and business centre of Switzerland. The most international city is Geneva, which is a sophisticated resort on the enormous Lake Geneva. Lucerne, a small but very tourist-friendly city, is also an interesting place to visit.
