Nature reserves and huge forests, historic cities and magnificent buildings: Sweden will make any tourist's visit worthwhile.
In the south of Sweden there is Götaland, a much fought-over piece of land on the border with Denmark. Here, you can discover well-preserved remains of Danish Viking settlements. The capital, Stockholm, is situated in the east, on the Baltic Sea. This magnificent capital, with an attractive old city centre and a large number of museums, is connected to the mainland by bridges.
On an island in Lake Mälaren, to the west of Stockholm, you will see Birka. This is an old settlement that grew into a mediaeval trading centre and is considered to be the birthplace of Sweden. In the north of Sweden, there is Norrland, a sparsely populated region with pine forests, snowfields and rocky outcrops.
