Porto is the second biggest city in Portugal and has been placed on UNESCO’s list of world heritage sites. It is situated on steep granite hills and provides a view of the River Douro. The city centre is a jumble of narrow nineteenth century lanes and alleyways. Porto’s main tourist attraction is the Vila Nova de Goia district, which is the historic birthplace of Port wine.
Porto has a large number of sights with religious connotations that are certainly worth a visit. They include Sé, a 13th-century cathedral, and Igreja de São Fransisco, a gothic church with rococo influences. Torre dos Clérigos, a 75-metre-high tower from the 18th century, is also worth a visit. From the top of this tower, you can enjoy a magnificent view of the city of Porto.
