Poland became free of Soviet domination in 1989, after 40 years of communism. The country still has the austere atmosphere of the former Eastern Block. Nonetheless, it is an excellent destination for culture and nature lovers.
Poland has a large number of castles, palaces and magnificent countryside. Northern Poland has beaches and lakes, the centre of the country is dominated by huge forests and the south is mainly mountainous. Poland also has over 20 national parks. Bialowieza is Europe’s oldest national park, with the only surviving primeval forest in Europe.
Warsaw is the capital of Poland. Cracow as well, is a major attraction for tourists. You will certainly be impressed by the market square, which is the biggest in Europe, surrounded by magnificent mansions. Poland still has a lot of traces of the Second World War, such as the Auschwitz concentration camp in the south and the remains of Hitler’s headquarters in Gierloz.
